The 25-metre-high tower in the Diepsterbos was opened in October 2022 as the highlight of the ‘Rondje Lauwersmeer’ project. The tower can be seen as two separate towers linked together. The section in the forest is green, whilst the section on the lakeside features brown-coloured Corten steel panels. The tower can be reached, amongst other ways, via the nature trail that has been laid out through the forest. As well as enjoying spectacular views from the tower, there is also plenty to learn here. The educational information panels teach you all about the unique National Park Lauwersmeer, covering topics such as the mudflats and the forest. As you look out over the rugged reed beds, Lauwersmeer and, on a clear day, Schiermonnikoog, you’ll also see plenty of birds flying past. Species such as the cormorant, the bearded reedling and the marsh harrier are regularly spotted in and around the Diepsterbos. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a white-tailed eagle!
National Park Lauwersmeer
When the Lauwerszee was cut off from the Wadden Sea in 1969, the Lauwersmeer was created. No one could have predicted at the time that the Lauwersmeer area would become one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands. Nowhere else will you find this combination of sweeping views of the horizon, stunning flora and fauna, and so much space for recreation.
