6 restaurants & cafés in the neighbourhood

New cafés and restaurants are mushrooming in Groningen centre, and you will find even more fun and enjoyable ones on the outskirts. Many locals frequent these venues, each of which has its very own and special story. We present 6 restaurants and cafés from the various Groningen districts.

Kroeg van Klaas

Oosterpoortbuurt – Sit at the bar with a draught beer while other patrons play billiards behind you and the barman chats away with a regular. It’s as if time has stopped in De Kroeg van Klaas, located in a village-like area just a few minutes from the city centre on foot. That this pub has been a household word in the Oosterpoortbuurt for almost 50 years is no great surprise. It’s the place to be for African jam sessions on Sunday afternoons, a monthly poetry club in the backroom and activities such as pub quizzes, dances and intimate concerts.

Beer&

Korrewegwijk – You will find the friendly Korrewegwijk within walking distance from the centre, next to the Noorderplantsoen park. This district features various lovely restaurants, which include Buurman&Buurman, De Padangbar and Beer&; the Groningen beer and food restaurant. The stress of choosing will be a thing of the past with their monthly menu comprising 3 meat, 3 fish and 3 vegetarian dishes. Using local and seasonal products from a local baker, fishmonger, butcher and their own kitchen garden, this is an asset for the district, both for residents and tourists.

Lambik

Oranjebuurt – The charming Lambik gastropub is located on the outskirts of the Noorderplantsoen park. 25 years ago the former pub was transformed into this colourful venue. Guests of all ages come to enjoy a fresh daily meal after whiling away an afternoon in the park. And we have news for you ever-doubters: it is impossible to linger for too long, because their daily menu consists of two dishes: vegetarian or meat, ensuring that fresh food is served at all times. On warm summer nights, when tables and chairs are moved outside, it’s easy to imagine yourself at an outdoor café in France.

Bisque

Helpman – In 2018 Jan Gaastra decided to close his Michelin star restaurant and start something new. The new project became Bisque! Jan tries to make the authentic flavours of the French kitchen accessible for everybody. Everything is made fresh in his own kitchen and only products of the best quality are being used.

De Klikspaan

Rivierenbuurt – Located right behind the main railway station, this charming café is frequented by people of all ages. Now this is what a local should be like, with everything you need to ensure a lovely evening. Have a flutter at the gambling machine, throw some darts and enjoy a nice cool draught speciality beer. With 40 speciality beers (and counting), this is the place to be for Friday afternoon drinks, a birthday or any other reason for a gathering. Not surprisingly, for the past 90 years this former off-licence is the ultimate place for a delightful spirit – of the liquid kind.

Het Oude Politiebureau

Oosterparkwijk – Het Oude Politiebureau city restaurant is a charming venue in a special building that features a decorative interior with various Oosterparkwijk elements. Dishes prepared according to recipes from all sorts and places are served here, while sustainability, the use of local ingredients and a social character are considered paramount. In addition, this is a non-profit work/training company where restaurant and café enthusiasts can learn the ropes of the trade while working. And don’t let their rates keep you away: the Oude Politiebureau considers everyone should be able to go out for a meal, so they keep prices low.

De Minnaar

Hortusbuurt- There is already over 100 years a café based in the Kleine Rozenstraat. The past 23 years De Minnaar is located here. This cosy café has a special place in the hearts of lots of people. The well filled games cabinet, the friendly staff and the comfortable terrace will make you feel at home. Sitting underneath the leaves in one of the most lovely streets in Groningen you can enjoy delicious food and drinks. In only 5 minutes you walk from the café to the city centre.
