Coffee in the city

Groningen residents love coffee and this is evident in the city’s street scene where you can find a coffee bar at almost every corner. All of them are special. Palazzo combines having coffee with shopping, ’t Feithhuis holds a workshop for future baristas on a monthly basis and Black & Bloom has raised preparing coffee to true science. Following is a list of various excellent coffee bars.

Black & Bloom

Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat 32 - A coffee highlight that should definitely be included in the list is Black & Bloom. This is the ultimate place to go for fantastic black coffee and individualistic Groningen hospitality. These people have unparalleled knowledge of and love for the coffee trade. You can discuss it at great length, but the following applies here: tasting is experiencing.

’t Feithhuis

Martinikerkhof 10 - The ’t Feithhuis baristas are happy to conjure up the most amazing and delicious espresso and cappuccino works of art. In addition, there is the monthly Barista Jam for real coffee lovers: a free workshop that teaches the tricks of the coffee trade and introduces the amazing world of coffee.

PS! Koffie, thee & taart

Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat 24 - Delicious coffee and a playful counter filled with homemade delicacies: what’s not to love? PS! stimulates the taste and olfactory senses and in addition is a feast for the eyes. Although this coffee bar with its colourful works of art looks playful, coffee is taken really seriously. Their coffee is made from 100% Arabica beans which are freshly roasted every week. PS: we love it.

MASMAS

Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat 65 - Picture this: Tuesday evening in Groningen. It is after 8 pm and you feel like coffee in a fun and small coffee bar somewhere in the city. Where to go? MASMAS (or: ++) is the only small coffee bar that is open after 6 pm for you and your friends to go for a good cup of coffee. In other words: the ultimate place to be for a late-night coffee. In addition to coffee, they also serve specials, such as the ++ signature Frapa (which resembles a smoothie), an experimental espresso-and-tonic or a homemade iced tea or milkshake. MASMAS is a popular meeting venue for hipsters and creative people who like a little crazy in their lives.

De Groene Stoel

Gedempte Zuiderdiep 26 - Homemade pie and a nice hot cup of coffee, the Groene Stoel is a place that allows you to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The kitchen works with organic and local products, which they incorporate into dishes from around the world. The Groene Stoel does not only provide good food, but also a good story. The restaurant has a programme where refugees get an education, with the prospect of getting a job in the hospitality sector. The restaurant became a place where refugees can regain their self-esteem and where they can start finding their way in a foreign country.

TOET het TOETjesparadijs

Gedempte Zuiderdiep 85 - This venue is highly recommended for sugar lovers. If you fancy something delicious to go with your coffee, you may sincerely say that coffee is served with a delicacy at the TOETjesparadijs. The menu changes daily and products are prepared using organic, local and gluten-free products where possible. This is also the place to order your cake or wedding cake or to follow a workshop. If you simply can’t get enough of all this overindulgence, consider a TOET (dessert) meal which consists of 7 courses of desserts, both savoury and sweet. All this is served during a programme from 6 pm until 10 pm, which is sure to keep you busy for a while.

Spaak Koffie & Koers

Oude Boteringestraat 66 - Spaak is Groningen's bicycle café. A place for cyclists and coffee enthusiasts. To get together, drink coffee, have lunch, watch a race, have your bicycle repaired, buy parts and to cycle! Every Saturday and Sunday you can cycle along with the Spaakrit, a trip of about 2 hours. But also as a non-cycling enthusiast you can go for a good cup of locally roasted coffee, a delicious lunch or sweet cake.

World of Barista

Grote Markt 35 - The World of Barista espresso bar is more than just a prominent location to enjoy a cup of delicious coffee. Guests are introduced to the world of baristas and it is the starting point for everyone who would like to learn more about coffee. With their extensive selection of workshops and training courses for both companies and private individuals, World of Barista is the perfect teacher in the area of coffee. Cappuvino

Vismarkt 1 - If you like to start the day with a cup of delicious coffee and conclude it with a fine glass of wine, there is a new highlight for you. Cappuvino resulted from a radical renovation that transformed it into a modern wine and coffee bar where quality and ambiance take centre stage. They also serve finger food and the venue has a lovely view of the Vismarkt, which is certainly worth a visit in its own right.

Palazzo Coffee

Zwanestraat 19 - Go to Palazzo to enjoy coffee the Italian way. Instead of offering clients a simple cup of coffee like most clothes shops, Palazzo has an entirely different approach. Their barista operates a wonderful and high-end coffee machine and serves coffee in the coffee corner and at the outdoor café. And successfully so, because with this wide selection of Italian coffee specialities and cake, you could easily forget that Palazzo is also a clothes shop.
