The longest museum railway line in the Netherlands is located between Stadskanaal and Veendam, on the border between the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe. Trains have been scheduled for the railway line around Stadskanaal since 1905, opening the town up for visitors from the village of Gieten. For years, Stadskanaal functioned as a main junction for the transport of people and goods. The road network expanded through the years, ultimately diminishing the demand for transport by train. The last train left the station in 1990, after which STAR was established in 1992 to maintain the railway line as an industrial monument.
