Walk on the former sea

Without even knowing it you will be rambling around through the rugged nature of what was once the seabed. And suddenly you come face-to-face with a wild horse. Spoonbills are sunbathing in the distance. Gorgeous orchids are blooming. Let nature guide you through this incredible beauty. Good to know: many of the routes start at Lauwersnest Activity Centre. 

Belevingstocht Lauwersom tour

Would you like to experience all the variations on the border between salt and fresh? The Belevingstocht Lauwersom walking tour. This walk begins at Het Informatie Paviljoen (Strandweg 5) and takes you mainly through Lauwersoog harbour. This route connects the lake with the sea, with an outlook post on the dike, a very unique wooden walkway and the water park at Het Booze Wijf restaurant.
 

Duindoornroute (Buckthorn route)

This 2.8 km path takes you along the water and in to the forest towards Robbenoort. Alternating landscape of dense foliage and open fields. Start at the Het Booze Wijf restaurant car park.
 

Observatietorenroute (Observation tower route)

Explore the Ballastplaatbos forest during this approximately one hour walk (5.6 km). You will pass a sand martin hide along the way. The absolute highlight is the observation tower with views over the rugged fields. Start at the Lauwersnest Activity Centre car park.
 

Konijnenroute (Rabbit route)

An adventurous route for animal lovers through the southern part of the Ballastplaatbos forest. You may just meet a Konik horse on this 3.3 km route. Or walk past Scottish Highland cattle grazing in the fields. Start at the Lauwersnest Activity Centre car park.


Natuurpad (Nature path)

Nice walks suitable for small children? Then the nature path is for you. Not too far (1.5 km) and lots to do. Lots of questions and tasks along the way. Start at the Lauwersnest Activity Centre car park.
 

Route for those with a disability

Do you have difficulty walking? No worries, there is plenty for you to do in the Lauwersmeer area. This entire 2.9 km route is on paved paths. Nieuwe Robbengat and the Marnewaard are both wheelchair/scooter accessible so come and enjoy them. Start at the Lauwersnest Activity Centre car park.
 

Vogelroute (Bird route)

This 4.8 km route takes you through grasslands, extensive reed fields and the Zomerhuisbos. About halfway you can stop and take a look at the fabulous views over the Lauwersmeer area from an outlook hill. Start at the Kwelderweg west car park.
 

Marneroute (Marne route)

A 7.5 km walk will take you through the Lauwersoogbos, over part of the Marnewaard and through the Marnebos. Walking is prohibited here during military exercises and this is clearly marked. Start at the Strandpaviljoen Meerzicht car park.
