The gardens of Waddenland
Stroll through magnificently coloured gardens. In Waddenland, you’ll find tranquillity in places from a stately castle or church garden to the Arboretum Notoarestoen with its wonderful tree collection. Some locations even have a pick-your-own flower garden.
Domies Toen
Just how many different plant species can a garden of just under one hectare hold? At the foot of the Petruskerk church in the village of Pieterburen is Domies Toen: a botanical garden which has been acknowledged as a museum garden. Once a parsonage farm, today it’s a multi-coloured example of a garden with winding paths – the Groningen version of an English-styled landscape garden. Stroll around the garden to chill and enjoy the gentle hum and buzz of insects.

If you’ve enjoyed the flowers of the countryside, and you’d like to bring home a lovely bouquet, you should know that Groningen features various pick-your-own gardens where you can do just that. There’s the Pluktuin Lageweg in Bedum or the Bloemenboerderij near Saaxumhuizen. Pick your favourites to arrange your very own bouquet and bring some of those Groningen colours and scents into your home or accommodation.
Manor gardens
The Waddenland is dotted with ancient borgen – Groningen manor houses. It was of great importance to many of their rich owners to have lovely gardens around their properties. Take the Landgoed Verhildersum rural estate and the Menkemaborg manor, which are both surrounded by beautiful gardens that allow for lovely walks. Take the shell paths and admire the magnificent display of colours.

This botanical garden with trees and shrubbery was developed in the 18th and 19th centuries as an experiment with exotic greenery, with the idea of dispersing it. Today, most arboreta also function as centres for scientific research and education.
