On safari in the Groningen countryside
Jan Willems gets out of the Land Rover and opens the gate to Lauwersmeer National Park. In his 9 seat all-terrain vehicle, we bump across a sandy path where ‘regular’ visitors are not allowed. Willems used to work as a forester in this area and today takes visitors for safaris.
“ "Spotting the impressive white-tailed eagle from up close is unforgettable" ”
Jan Willems
‘We came across a newborn calf the other day, exactly here, where we are driving now. We also regularly see the white-tailed eagle, which is great for the visitors and always impresses me too.’ A white-tailed eagle is a bird of prey also referred to as ‘the flying door’ because of its wingspan of over two metres. He feels right at home in the Lauwersmeer area where he fishes among the fishermen from Zoutkamp.
