Serene or slightly spooky? Whichever, churchyards always exude a special atmosphere that combines perfectly with visual art. The Op Hoogte Gedacht project features works of art in Groningen churchyards. Two bicycle routes take in this art and the magnificent churches next to the churchyards.

Paving stones that have fallen over, or is it art? This 46-kilometre bicycle route starts and ends at the work of art located beside the Obergum church in Winsum. Another three intriguing works of art can be found on the churchyards of Zuurdijk, Vierhuizen and Wierhuizen. The Wierhuizen church was demolished a long time ago, but there actually still is a church here. Let this info work into your brain for a bit. Cycle back to Obergum via Pieterburen and Eenrum, both lively villages with various bars, cafés and restaurants.

A shorter bicycle route (depending on where you start) takes in the works of art at the churchyards of the villages of Wittewierum and Woltersum. The stack of bronze bones at Wittewierum are sure to make you consider mortality. Near Woltersum are two works of art, one of which a giant gate that invites people to view the countryside from a different perspective. Start and end this route which takes in the two churchyards in Ten Post, Stedum or Loppersum. Many churches in Groningen are open to the public, so feel free to enter.
