Noordkaap
North Cape is the northernmost tip of the mainland of the Netherlands. From here you have an unobstructed view of the water and the endless sky above the Wad.
Take a look
The Artwork "De Hemelpoort" marks a precise place. "The Hemelpoort" is an impressive 2.5 meter high gate made of corten steel. Due to exposure to the weather (and there is plenty of it here), the gate has its rusty brown color. The Groningen artist René de Boer actually called his gate "Poort Noord", but "De Hemelpoort" soon became a popular favorite. If you stand here on top of the dike and look out over the sandbanks, you can only agree with that.
Noordkaap is approximately 10 kilometers north of Uithuizermeeden. There are signs directing towards Noordkaap from that village. Follow the route by car, bicycle or on foot. The last kilometer can only be walked or cycled. After a fifteen minute walk you are on top of the sea dike. Next to "De Hemelpoort" is a bench to rest on. Emptiness can be wonderful.
