To the beach in Midden-Groningen
Playing with or in the water or taking a dip on a sunny day are simply the best things in life. The Schildmeer lake in Steendam, the Botjes Zwembaai in Zuidbroek, the Zuidlaardermeer lake in Kropswolde, the Grunostrand beach near Groningen or the pool in Kolham are all great places for fun in and out of the water.
Schildmeer lake
Go to the large beach by the Schildmeer lake near Steendam where there’s a new landing stage set up to jump from. The water of this large lake – the second largest in Groningen – is very clean. The beach pavilion has bathroom and showering facilities, and of course ice cream.
The Schildmeer lake is surrounded by outdoor cafés, such as Kaap Steendam, which regularly hosts live bands and performances. A bit further on is the De Otter outdoor café, which resembles a wooded log cabin with a view over the lake. Further on is the Paviljoen De Tijd Schildmeer. After a day spent swimming, sailing or playing in the sun, this is the perfect place for a delicious meal as you enjoy the stunning view over the Schildmeer lake. Simply take the bicycle path by the beach: it passes all of those outdoor cafés.
Kropswolde
The Meerwijck beach at Kropswolde is another lovely beach with a playground. This is also where you’ll find the Vifero beach club with its spacious outdoor café and cocktail lounge. So order that cocktail, bury your feet in the sand, chill and enjoy.
Hoogezand
Another great option: the play fountain in the Hooge Meeren shopping centre in Hoogezand, located in a lovely green area. Situated between the Kielzog and the Hema, this is a delightful spot for children. Chill and enjoy the sun while your children live it up, or enjoy a drink at the Kielzog outdoor café.
