CYCLING IN OLDAMBT
Get on your bike to explore the Oldambt region and breathe in that fresh air. Establish your very own route from cycling junction to cycling junction, or opt for a long haul on one of the long-distance routes. Be sure to take the occasional break at one of the rustpunten (rest points). Find that perfect bicycle route and be astonished by all the beauty of the Oldambt.
Guided by junctions
One of the most fun things to do is hop on a bicycle and just make your own way. And the bicycle network Routebureau Groningen makes this just that little bit easier. Simply use the junctions to decide your very own bicycle route. Be sure to decide the junctions you wish to include in your ride and write them down. After heading out, follow the green and white signposts between the junctions. You’ll find a signpost with a map at each junction so you can easily lengthen or shorten your route. The Routebureau Groningen website features a handy map which includes all of the junctions and routes.

Oldambt is also a great destination for those who are into really long bicycle rides. The LF9 NAP route runs from Bad Nieuweschans all the way to Breda at the other end of the Netherlands: about 465 kilometres. We hear you when you say that this might be a bit too much, so there’s the shorter LF10 Waddenzeeroute. This route covers a distance of 275 kilometres, from Bad Nieuweschans and the Afsluitdijk dam to Callantsoog. Anyway, you can always consider cycling a part of it if an entire route is too long for you.

The Dollard is one of the most impressive scenic areas in the Netherlands. The German-Dutch bicycle ride across the International Dollard Route is about 300 kilometres long and takes through vast polders. This scenic area is criss-crossed with ring canals and waters, of vital importance to the Oldambt inhabitants. Look around and see how this area provides the perfect habitat for special flora and fauna to thrive. Part of the route is done by boat. From May through September, a special cyclist/pedestrian ferry operates between the harbours of Ditzum, Emden and Delfzijl.

When you’re ready for a break from your tour through the Oldambt, be sure to check out one of the rustpunten (rest points) that dot the region. Rest points are self-supporting locations along bicycle routes and trails where visitors to the region can stop and rest. Enjoy your cup of coffee and cake and leave a voluntary contribution. You can also get a puncture repaired or a tyre inflated, and other small bits and parts for bikes are available too. You’ll recognise the rest points by their large and clearly visible signposts. See the rest points in the region below.
