Ter Apel

Ter Apel – a village that developed around a mediaeval monastery – is located in the ancient Westerwolde woodlands. Its history is clearly visible throughout the village, but Ter Apel has more to it. Explore its charming village centre with its lovely shops or set out on a trail through the surrounding countryside.

The last rural monastery in the north-west of Europe that has conquered the ages is the monastery in Ter Apel, which was founded in 1464. Its function as a place of hospitability and worship for passing travellers also drew other people to the area, resulting in the establishment of the village. The former monastery is open to visitors. One of the best times to visit is when the mediaeval Ter Apel event is held to see what things were like here in the olden days.

The Ter Apel canal cuts right through the charming village centre and is fringed with various shops, varying from large store chains to mostly small and special shops to provide that ‘Couleur Locale’. The village centre is also where activities and events are held. Naturally, you will find plenty of tearooms and restaurants for a drink or bite to eat.

Ter Apel has more on offer than its beautiful castle and lovely shops: located in a green area, there’s lots more to explore. The monastery is surrounded by the Kloosterbossen woodlands, home to huge, impressive old oak and beech trees. Alternatively, choose a trail through the Ruiten Aa stream valley just outside the village. Wherever you turn, there is always a new sight to take in.
