Veenkoloniën
Time was when adventurers sought and found fortune in the vast peat moors of the Veenkoloniën peat district. Their trail-blazing work resulted in an extraordinary landscape with an equally interesting history. Linear villages developed alongside the canals that were used for peat shipping. In the 19th century, fortune came with the establishment of sawmills, shipbuilding yards and factories, which is evident from the numerous historic buildings.
