Museum Kapiteinshuis | Back in the day
Pekela – the slogan of the Museum Kapiteinshuis is: ‘Step into the 19th century’. Enter the museum doors to step right into the past. This museum exudes the atmosphere of a captain who has just stepped out and may walk through the door at any moment. The date of building is 1799, as is read on the undermost part of the doorpost. They also indicate the initials of the captains that had the house built.

While taking a break during a walk on the heathland, Margaretha Hardenberg, the wife of village’s founder Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck, fell asleep. When she woke up, she saw a snake had coiled around her. Margaretha feared for her life and promised the snake she would have a church built on that very same spot if he’d let her go. Nieuwe Pekela – This beautiful circular stone mill was built in 1891. Its main function was to mill flour, but after a renovation in 1970 it was converted to an animal feed mill. The Pot family owned the mill for years, until in 2003 they sold it to the Stichting Molen De Zwaluw. A few years ago, the mill was renovated for the second time. Did you know that this mill is one of the last circular stone mills in the Netherlands to be retained?

Stadskanaal – Here is a tip for die-hard fans of trains: the STAR museum railway line is located on the border between the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe. Go back into time on a wonderful train journey from Stadskanaal and Veendam, and vice versa. The station also features a museum with an extensive exhibition about the history of the railway line.
