Mountain bike trails in Westerwolde
If some action and activity is what you’re after, hop on a mountain bike. Extending over 200 kilometres, the Westerwolde mountain bike network is one of the longest in the Netherlands. It comprises five separate yet interconnected BMX routes, taking in the ancient Smeerling woodlands and small arable areas.

Mountain biking entails more than just rough cycling: it’s all about the combination of strength, endurance, coordination and technique. Inhale that fresh country air; the perfect recipe for an active outing that will leave you fighting fit. Routes vary from technical tracks through wooded areas and across sand hills, while others take in heathlands, pastures and fields or go past pools and canals. Each of the Westerwolde routes has lots of scenery, so be sure to look around now and then! After all, you don’t want to come and realise you have missed out on all the beauty Westerwolde has to offer.

Each of the starting points above features a café or restaurant for a drink and bite to eat or use the bathroom. Guests of the Camping Wedderbergen (during the tourist season) and Restaurant De Ruiten Aa are welcome to take a shower, and the Pagedal has changing rooms and showers available for €2.50 p.p

- Cycle in smaller groups of 6-8 people (divide large groups into smaller ones)
- Cycle at a gentle pace and in single file when passing other users (such as hikers)
- Warn other recreational cyclists in good time and appropriately (do not shout)

- Respect the countryside
