Routes in Midden-Groningen for the entire family

8.8 km – This bicycle ride includes various options for a stop and climb. Number one is the Kolham wooded area, near Zwaneveldsgat, where you’ll find various climbing frames, water and a raft. Naturally, you can also do some serious tree climbing here. Continue to the ’t Roegwold scenic area where there’s a watchtower, and to the Goldbergweg, where you turn left. Turn left again on the Hoofdweg to return to Kolham. If the outdoor café at Ecomotion is open, you’re welcome to climb and play in the large wooden play castle. The Kolham mill – called the Entreprise – is open and in operation most weekends. Climb all the way to the top to see the miller work. Don’t forget to get some ice cream afterwards

10.7 km – In Groningen, castles are called borgen. One of them is the beautiful Fraeylemaborg, located in Slochteren, where you can learn all about the people that lived here a long time ago. The large park behind it has a barefoot path, which is great fun in summer. From the castle, cycle to Groenedijk and its three polder draining-mills – used to transport water from a lower to a higher area. Turn left after the third mill and into the Ruitenweg. Turn left again on the Hoofdweg. The second road to the right will take you to the Baggerputten scenic area, where no fewer than twenty butterfly and twenty-five dragonfly species live in a perfect habitat. Return to the castle where the Pannenkoekenschip Volharding pancake ship awaits you

8 km – If you are into birds, this is the perfect route for you. From the Meerwijck beach, head out to the Kropswolderbuitenpolder, where you’ll find a birdwatcher’s hut (wheelchair accessible). Spot rare birds, such as whiskered turn, black-necked grebe and even white-tailed eagle. The polder, or area of reclaimed land, opens up to the Westerbroeksemadepolder, which features the De Kiekhorn birdwatcher’s hut. This cabin is only accessible on foot and provides a lovely view of water birds, stilt walkers and meadow birds. Great white egret, wagtail and hen harrier also find a home here. Return the same way you came to get that well-deserved ice cream at Beachclub Vifero.

15 km – Get those wheels turning and collect the ingredients to make that delicious Groningen pancake. During the pancake route, visit various stands by the road to learn about the origin of your food. See how flour is ground at the Molen Mulder Pot mill and buy some super fresh eggs at Ms Ei at De Ei Halte. If you want your pancake to be really special, simply get some more delicious ingredients, such as cheese or fruit. Ready? Steady? Go! All that’s left to do now is make your pancakes. Enjoy!
